The Mental Health Client Action Network of Santa Cruz County is a peer-run organization dedicated to providing mutual support and networking, having a voice in all matters which affect us, creating programs controlled by peers, advocating for the right to choose our own life’s path, educating the public from our perspective, working to eradicate treatment disparities, and confronting discrimination. We provide a place of connection with folks who really care in the tumult of life.
Many MHCAN members are unhoused and use our facilities to shower and maintain personal hygiene. Maintaining personal hygiene can help members reintegrate to society, engage in the job market, and maintain personal dignity.
We will provide showers four days a week for up to 50 people a day at our drop-in center. The shower list is always full for our two showers (one is handicapped accessible). We do not have funding for toiletries, towels, toothbrushes, or other hygiene supplies. Please help us to meet this important need.
At the age of 50 while experiencing homelessness in Santa Cruz County I got my first job. The MHCAN shower program has helped me get off of the street by providing the resources for me to take care of my personal hygiene and maintain my job. Not only have I kept the job I have become a shift leader. I have been able to maintain my employment while not disclosing my unhoused status. This helped me avoid stigma and discrimination that could have impacted my forward momentum. Having hygienic stability has allowed me to engage on a human level with others and to rejoin society. -Shelley X.
