Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County

Organization Mission

We create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Our vision is that all youth achieve their full potential. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

Since 1982, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County has served at no cost over 8,500 at-risk youth through our outcomes-based, proven model of mentoring services. We serve youth of all genders, ages 6-19+ (previously 6-17) and their families who face a wide range of challenges.

The Big Idea 2024:
It Takes Little to Be Big

“It Takes Little to Be Big” is driven by the belief that mentorship is a powerful catalyst for transformation. Mentorship thrives on compassion, patience, and presence. Our mission is to extend this influence to all children, irrespective of their circumstances.

Small, impactful moments ignite curiosity and unlock hidden potential in young minds. We invite individuals from all walks of life to become mentors, giving their time, advice, and listening ear.

We invite you to become a mentor or volunteer and be a part of a community that shares the belief that all it takes is a little time, a dash of encouragement, and a hearty laugh or two to ensure that every child has access to what—and who—they need to pave the way for a substantial and brighter future. Mentorship changes lives. Mentorship sounds huge, but the truth is…IT TAKES LITTLE TO BE BIG.

I’m constantly in awe of how much I personally get out of being in the program as a mentor and being matched to such a wonderful young woman. You find time for what brings you joy, and [my Little] Brenda certainly does that for me. I hope I do the same for her as well. (Brenda and Amé have been matched since Dec. 2017.)
