Free Books for Kids

Organization Mission

Our all-volunteer program gives free gently-used books to children, caregivers, and educators. Experts carefully select high-quality novels, early readers, baby books, and nonfiction. We distribute the books to children with limited access to reading material, especially in homes where books are scarce. Many books we rescue would otherwise be discarded or pulped. We reduce waste and give these books meaningful new lives.

The Big Idea 2026:
Free Books for Kids in Santa Cruz County

The demand for our books has increased by 275% in the past five years. We work with all local school districts, and now collaborate with nine partners, including the Santa Cruz Museum of Discovery, the UCSC teacher preparation program and several pediatric departments. Used, high-demand books can cost up to $3 each. With increased funding, we could purchase and distribute many more books.

Our collaboration with FBFK has been incredible, with over 2,000 books distributed since January. Kids love selecting the books with their families. This program fosters literacy, inspires curiosity, and strengthens our community—we are proud to partner!
