Save Our Shores

Organization Mission

Our mission is to foster thriving and sustainable ecosystems in the Monterey Bay and surrounding habitats through equitable environmental action.

We focus on advocacy to promote policy change, offer youth education programs, and engage community members in beach, river, and open-space cleanups. Cleanups are educational ā€” a first step in expanding awareness of pollution and the connection between ecosystems, wildlife, and community health. Data from the cleanups set the stage for our local and statewide policy initiatives and in 2024 alone so far, 3,517 volunteers have removed over 15,900 pounds of trash.

The Big Idea 2025:
The Shores of Tomorrow

Over the past year and a half, we extended our education programs into communities where there is little or no funding for marine science and experiential learning opportunities. As the state grant ends for our Junior Sanctuary Stewards program, we are looking for additional resources to keep it afloat.

This after-school education program was implemented for 215 underserved middle school students and their families this fall. In 15 weeks, Save Our Shores built meaningful one-on-one mentoring relationships, collaborated with 18 Santa Cruz County schools, reached 1,429 youth, and completed 41 marine conservation education programs.

We are dedicated to creating inclusive youth education programs that empower every young person to engage in transformative outdoor experiences.

The kids had an amazing time and I really believe that our vision for the Junior Sanctuary Stewards program translated into reality, with passionate, committed members. Iā€™m grateful to be a part of such an important program.
